Notes: 1. The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is almost spherical and consists of hot plasma interwoven with magnetic fields. It has a diameter of about 1,392,684 km (865,374 mi), around 109 times that of Earth, and its mass (1.989×1030 kilograms) accounts for about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. Chemically, about three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen, whereas the rest is mostly helium. The remaining 1.69% consists of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon and iron, among others. The Sun formed about 4.567 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of a region within a large molecular cloud.

6. The Sun in some Cultures and Religions
Humans have long recognized the Sun's role in supporting life on Earth, and as a result many societies throughout history have paid homage to the Sun by giving it prominent roles in their religions and mythologies... The religious significance of the Sun has its roots in the very earliest of recorded Western history. Both the ancient Greeks and ancient Romans worshipped one or more solar deities... In the Qur'an, the Islamic religious scripture, the Sun like other celestial objects is not endowed with any particular religious significance or symbolic meaning. Due to the widespread presence of Sun-worshiping cults in Pre-Islamic Arabia, Muslim doctrine, the Shariah forbade all prayers during the rising and setting of the Sun, to symbolically refute its divinity. Pre-Islamic Arab pagans considered solar eclipses and other celestial occurrences as omens signaling the passing of an important figure or other earthly events. However, this belief was refuted explicitly by the Prophet Muhammad in the year 632 C.E, when the death of his son coincided with a solar eclipse.

خورشید (خور+ شید) = خور. مهر. هور. شمس. شارق. بیضاء. شید (مهذب الاسماء) معشوقه ٔ جمشید (ناظم الاطباء) روز. غزاله (یادداشت بخط دهخدا): ستاره ای که جاذبه ٔ گرانشی آن اجرام منظومه ٔ شمسی را بر مداراتشان نگاه می دارد. نزدیکترین ثوابت است به زمین و با وجود عظمت نسبی آن نسبت به اجرام منظومه ٔ شمسی در مقام مقایسه با سایر ستارگان ستاره ٔ زرد کوتوله ای بیش نیست که در شاخه ای مارپیچی نزدیک حاشیه ٔ خارجی کهکشان جا دارد. برای ساکنین زمین خورشید از مهمترین ستارگان است ، اشعه ٔ آن منبع حرارت، نور، مواد غذائی، سوخت و قدرت است . در طی حرکت ظاهری روزانه ٔ خود در آسمان به رشد گیاهان کمک می کند، زمین را گرم می سازد، آب را از منابع مختلف تبدیل به بخار می کند، در تولید بادها سهیم است و اعمال بسیار دیگر نیز انجام می دهد که برای وجود انسان اهمیت حیاتی دارد: تارنمای لغت نامه دهخدا

خورشیدپرستی یا مِهرپرستی یا آیین مهر یا میترائیسم آیینی بود که بر پایه ی پرستش میترا (در پارسی میانه: مهر) ایزد ایران باستان و خدای خورشید، عدالت، پیمان و جنگ، در دوران پیش از آیین زرتشت بنیان نهاده شد. نوع دگرگون شده این آیین بعدها در امپراتوری روم اشاعه یافت و در طول سده‌های دوم و سوم پس از میلاد، در تمام نواحی تحت فرمانروایی روم، در سرزمین اصلی اروپا، شمال آفریقا و بریتانیا برپا بود و خدای آن میتراس (معادل یونانی میترا) نام داشت... از دوران داریوش هخامنشی به بعد، آیین زرتشت، دین رسمی ایران بوده است. با اینحال، داریوش و جانشینانش قصد نداشتند شرایط سیاسی سختگیرانه ای ایجاد کنند تا باورهای قدیمی را که همچنان نزد بسیاری از نجیب‌زادگان محبوب بود، از میان بردارند. بدینسان آیین زرتشت، رفته‌رفته با عناصر آیین چند ایزدی قدیم در هم آمیخت و یَشت هایی در ستایش ایزدان کهن سروده شد. یشتی در اوستا به نام مهر یَشت به مهر یا میترا اختصاص داده شده است که در آن مهر، ایزدی نظاره‌گر بر همه چیز، روشنایی آسمانی، نگاهبان پیمان‌ها، محافظ نیکوکاران در این گیتی و در آخرت و بالاتر از هر چیز، دشمن بزرگ اهریمن و تاریکی و خداوند نبرد و پیروزی ها تصویر شده است: تارنمای دانشنامهٔ آزاد ویکی‌پدیا
